Week 02: Computer Aided design

This is week #2 of FabAcademy 2024. This week we focus on 2D and 3D design. As in week #1, we can choose the software we will be using for this weeks assignments and of course don´t forget to document as you go. So, I choose for this week assignments:

Is a software application for creating drawings, illustrations, and artwork using a Windows or MacOS computer. Illustrator was initially released in 1987 and it continues to be updated at regular intervals, and is now included as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud. Illustrator is widely used by graphic designers, web designers, visual artists, and professional illustrators throughout the world to create high quality artwork. Illustrator includes many sophisticated drawing tools that can reduce the time need to create illustrations.

Is a 3D parametric design software that is used to design all sorts of products such as automobiles, marine equipment, airplane parts, cell phones, cameras, furniture, electrical assemblies, glasses, lighting fixtures, toys, vacuum cleaners, or any other like product you can think of. SolidWorks is typically used to design assemblies that work mechanically.

It’s one of the most popular design and engineering software on the market. Known for its range of features and high functionality, it is used across multiple professions and industries around the world. SOLIDWORKS uses parametric design, which is why it’s such an effective tool for designers and engineers. This means that the designer can see how changes will affect its neighboring components, or even the overall solution. For example, if the size of a single component is increased, this would affect the joint or hole it’s attached to. This allows designers to spot and correct issues quickly and easily

Lets start this week activities

I'm going to use Illustrator to do a 2D design. I'm thinkin a logo for the lamp.

This is my first time using Illustrator and in a MAC, so lets see how it goes:

  1. We start by openning Illustrator
  2. We need to choose the type file, I choose custom.
  3. And we start our design, so I explore some font that Illustrator has.
  4. Add an image/logo/icon as part of the design.
  5. Add some details.
  6. Ilustrator can save files in a various type of formats.

Lets begin our design using SolidWorks

Before starting the desing we got to follow this steps:

  1. Open SolidWorks
  2. And choose Part and clic Ok.
  3. Then it's important to select the units of measurements we're going to use and start drawing.
  4. When you start designing you got to use the smart dimensions so that your desgin is fully defined. (if there are blue lines something is missing.)

Now that we have some basic que can continue with the design

  1. Make round edges with arc command, then erase some lines with trim entities and finally make a horizontal relation with the origin and the two arcs.
  2. We extrude 8cm Boss/Base.
  3. Then we round the edges, we can estimate, it depends how round you wish.
  4. We make the slot for the lamp, acrylic figure and deposit.
  5. Now the slot for the acrylic figure.
  6. For something extra, we can paste the logo in a face of the base.
  7. And apply some color.
